The
shorthair was the pre-dominant cat in Britain through to the mid
1890's.
They had developed a large range of coat colors and from
such cats pedigree show cats developed.
By the turn of the century
(!900) the longhair cat had become the more favored breed for show
purposes and the shorthair cat began to fade away in popularity.
Fortunately The Short Haired Cat Society was formed about 1901 to
take interest in and revitalize the popularity of the breed in the
show ring.
The
current British Shorthair cat owes much of it's appearance to an
infusion of Persian cat blood with that of the natural domestic cats
found throughout the British Isles in the past.
The
British Shorthair has a powerful although rather short body. A full broad
chest, broad shoulders and hips, short strong legs, a thick tail and rounded
paws.
A round broad head with strong chin and full cheeks, round expressive
eyes. The
British shorthair cats fur is short, thick (dense), springy, firm and plush.
The most traditional color for the British Shorthair is blue although black
was also one of its earlier colors. Currently these cats come in many
colors-example are: Black, Blue, White, Cream, Black Smoke, Blue Smoke,
Classic Tabby Pattern, Mackerel Tabby, Spotted Tabby, Silver tabby, Red
Tabby, Brown Tabby, Blue Tabby, Cream Tabby, Tortie, Calico, Blue Cream
& Br Color. British
Shorthair cats
are loving, affectionate, good natured, intelligent cats. Independent,
