American
Shorthair Cat
The American Shorthair cats medium to large sized cats, with
powerful legs and strong paws. Their muzzle is squarish. Their coat is
short, with the fur being thick and stiff. The American Shorthair is slimmer
than its close cousin, the British
Shorthair. American Shorthairs are very affectionate and make a good
family pet.

The American Short Hair cat was
originally called the "Domestic Shorthair"
It's name was changed during the
mid-sixties to raise the status of the breed above that of the common
non-pedigree, domestic and house pet cats.
Descendant from "Ship
Cats" that arrived in America from the days of first European
settlement the American Shorthair cat enjoyed little respect or regard as a
cat breed up until the early 1900's when the first home-bred, American,
Domestic Shorthair was accepted and registered.
Thereafter the breed went from
strength-to-strength in status to be renamed with the new title of
"American Shorthair"
